Chrome 64 will Prevent Videos from Reproducing Automatically

During the navigation, you will often and surely stumbled on Web pages adorned with videos that start their playback in an automatic way. Everyone will agree that many of the times, the media in question often hinders the navigation, making a sudden appearance during the reading. To curb this disorder, Google will prevent Chrome 64 from automatically replaying it, even implementing multiple media controls for those videos.

Chrome 64: Change the policy on AutoPlay of multimedia content

In a post today of the blog, the development team of Chromium highlighted the pros and cons of the feature of auto video playback, which is present in services like YouTube and substantially in any other streaming service:

"Users watch and listen to a lot of multimedia content and the AutoPlay feature can facilitate their use in Web pages. However, one of the most frequent premures is the sudden reproduction of content, which can consume mobile data, reduce the autonomy of the smartphone, occupy system resources and cause unwanted disturbances during playback."

The work to improve the situation will start from Chrome 64, currently available in Canary version, where will be finally introduced a new policy by Google that prevents the media to start automatically. While on the contrary, media that will not play sounds or have content of interest on the part of the user, will have the ability to reproduce automatically. In the post, the team in fact specifies:

"This will allow AutoPlay to start when users have interest in content, while it will be disabled if the majority of people don't want to see it. These changes will cover both the desktop side and the mobile web, making it easier and more predictable to develop content across platforms and browsers."

Several controls, such as the ability to disable audio for each site, will still make the appearance in Chrome version 63. While for publishers, Google has laid out rules for AutoPlay, in order to give users more control over their playback and make it easier for content creators to implement auto-play.
